2021 Teen Reading Challenge: Read a murder mystery

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

One of Us is Lying is a high school murder mystery with an unlikely group of students brought together by the unexpected and suspicious death of a classmate during detention and they find themselves all suspects. The chapters alternate telling the story from each of the students' perspectives and as it progresses everything you thought you knew gets turns on its head with a twist at the end you don't see coming!

The group of students in One of Us is Lying is described as a group similar to The Breakfast Club. In the John Hughes cult classic starring Molly Ringwald, five high school students find themselves thrown together in Saturday morning detention. Starting the day thinking they have nothing in common, by the end of the day they've all become unlikely friends. The comparison to Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, Cooper, and Simon is pretty apt!

One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus

Karen McManus is a talented writer of young adult mysteries. In One of Us is Next, the sequel to One of Us is Lying, we see some of our favorite characters from the first book, while also being introduced to a whole new cast of characters and a brand new life-or-death mystery. She has also written two stand-alone mysteries, Two Can Keep a Secret and The Cousins, with a third stand-alone, You'll Be the Death of Me, scheduled to come out in Fall 2021!

All of McManus's books would qualify for our 2021 Teen Reading Challenge: Read a murder mystery category. With this challenge, for teens grades 5-12th, each category completed earns the reader a small prize of their choice (fruit snacks, king-sized Kit Kats, or a power bar) and a chance to win an Amazon Fire Tablet! Once all 12 categories are completed the reader also earns a $10 gift card to the local business of their choice. Read and win!

One of Us is Lying is also a 2018 YALSA Teen Top Ten title. The Teens' Top Ten are books from the previous year that teens from fifteen school and public libraries across the United States select and then teens all over the country get to vote on. Nominations each year are posted in April on the Thursday of National Library Week, and then readers ages twelve to eighteen can vote online between August 15 - October 15 on the Teens' Top Ten site for their favorites, with the winners announced the following week. McManus' book, One of Us is Next, is on the nomination list for 2021, too!
