In City of Bones, the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, 15-year-old Clary Fray was headed into the club in New York City. She hardly expects to run into a guy who murders people, especially since he looks to be her age. He’s covered in strange tattoos and has odd weapons with him. He’s walking alongside two other teenagers who also have these traits. She witnesses a boy being murdered, but how come she’s the only one to see it? Who are these people? Was that even a boy? Through this series you will see Clary grow, meet new people, and find out the unthinkable.

This six-book series (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, City of Heavenly Fire) is great for anyone who loves an adventure, is into fiction or just likes a good story. The best part is this book is part of a series. There are six books total. Trust me, you will get hooked on book one and it only gets better from there. There’s something in this book for everyone. Romance, fighting, fictional characters, friendship. You won’t be disappointed, check it out!

The first book in the series has also been made into a movie! It was considered a box office flop, but not everyone agrees that it should have been. Check it out today and decide for your self.

The series was also turned into a TV show on Freeform called Shadowhunters. The pilot episode that aired in 2016 attracted the largest audience for Freeform in more than two years. The show itself also received numerous award nominations, winning one GLAAD Award, six Teen Choice Awards and five People's Choice Awards. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after three seasons, but is currently streaming for free on Freeform!

Escapism at the Library (and Beyond!)

 
The One Kingdom by Sean Russell

During times of great stress or overwhelming life events, many turn to reading for escapism. Whatever genre you typically enjoy, fantasy novels are full of unique settings, flawed, colorful characters that are sure to draw you in.

In The One Kingdom, the first book of the Swan's War series by Sean Russell, chaos has been troubling the kingdom after the King of Ayr died and left no heir to the throne, centuries ago. The conspiracies of the Renne and Wills, two families desperate to control the throne, give way to generations of strife. Toren Renne, leader of his house, desires peace for the kingdom. However, the remaining nobles in his house disagree and their ambitions cause turmoil throughout the house. On the other side, the Wills’s have their own lust for power as they arrange an unwanted marriage for Elise. The constant conflicts between the Renne and Wills leave the common folk stranded.

The closer Toren gets to his goals for the kingdom, the more opposition he meets. Nobles and mystics work to keep the houses divided to sabotage Toren’s ideals. Before Toren has a chance to succeed, the entire kingdom of Ayr is engulfed in bloodshed.

Similar to The One Kingdom, the kingdom is torn apart and it will require magic, wars and hope for a better future. This series begins with The Way of Kings following unlikely protagonists as their story arcs intertwine their destinies.

        

Watching funny commentary on YouTube, listening to comedy based music on Spotify, playing Magic: The Gathering or chatting with friends on Discord are some of the other ways to chill-out and escape the worries of school (and the annoyance of little brothers).
