Relationship Drama from Book to Screen

Serena (2014)

Serena, the 2014 film based on the book by Ron Rash, stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradly Cooper as newlyweds Serena and George Pemberton in depression-era North Carolina. George Pemberton’s timber empire is growing, providing jobs and a fortune for himself. Then he meets and quickly marries Serena. The Pembertons begin their newlywed life at the mountain where George's timber business is booming. Serena takes an active interest in the business, issuing orders, causing unhappiness all around with the exception of George. Serena’s downfall begins as she navigates the emotional heartache and insecurity of being unable to bear a child only to be confronted with a townswoman who bore George’s illegitimate child. The film features breathtaking scenery, a historical fiction base and a dark story line.

If you enjoy historical fiction with unconventional romance, you just might want to read the book that inspired the film! Critics might have a lot to say about the film adaptation, but you’ll have to judge for yourself if they did the book credit. Although we know the usual response is, “The book was better!”
