No Storytime This Week or Next

Storytime will be taking a little break for the next two weeks (Tuesday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 8) in order to allow extra time to prepare for the Summer Reading Program. Regular Tuesday storytimes will start up again on June 15, and continue through the summer.

Library Closed on Memorial Day

The Solon Library will be closed on Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day. On Tuesday, June 1, the library's summer hours will begin and last through the end of August.

Monday-Thursday 10 am-8 pm Friday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm Closed Sundays

Our Biggest Book Sale Ever!

It is almost time for the Friends of the Library Book Sale! We have over 8000 books, audio books, movies, and CDs that will be moved into the Library's Meeting Room for our Annual Sale. Whatever you enjoy ..... we'll have MORE of it than ever before! Most items are $0.25-$0.50

• SAT. May 29th: 8 am - 5 pm ($5 admission between 8-9 am only, after that - FREE)
• SUN. May 30th: 7 am - 12:30 p.m. (don't forget the Fireman's Breakfast & Garden Club Plant sale too!)
• MON. May 31st: 9 am - 1pm --- CLEARANCE 10 items/$1.00!

This weekly program is designed for children under 7 and their families. This program will last approximately 30 minutes. It's a great way to get ready for bed (toothbrush optional)!

Tuesday Storytime With Miss Kelly

Yummy yummy! On Tuesday, May 25, storytime is all about food. Come and listen to some delicious stories and then make up your own plate of breakfast food. Preschool storytime meets at 10:30 a.m. and is geared for ages 2-5, but siblings are always welcome. Each session consists of 20-25 minutes of stories, songs, and action rhymes followed by a craft. No registration is required.

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest

The first two books in this series by Steig Larsson (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire) have been extremely popular here at the library, so we are very excited that the last book is coming out soon. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest will be officially released on May 25, so expect the library to have it around that time. There will probably be a few people waiting for it, so make sure to call or stop in to reserve your copy today! We will have both the regular hardcover book as well as the audiobook.

Happy Birthday Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on this day 151 years ago. He is the author of the timeless Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Sherlock Holmes is one of the great characters of English literature and has survived very well into the 21st century. Although multiple novels and films have featured Holmes, nothing can really compare to Conan Doyle's original stories. He wrote 56 short stories and 4 novels featuring the great detective. We have the entire Holmes collection in three large volumes under FIC DOY in the adult section.

Emily the Strange, her first book, captures the quintessential Emily, featuring her most beloved quips and a host of new ones. Anarchist, heroine, survivor, this little girl with a big personality appeals to the odd child in us all. Caitlyn Says: I really liked the twist on how she had amnesia, and she has to figure out how to stop her amnesia. It was a very addicting book and I couldn't put it down.

Tuesday Storytime With Jen

On Tuesday, May 18, I will be doing my favorite books at storytime. It will be librarian's choice. Since one of my favorites is The Napping House by Audrey Wood, we will get to recreate the last scene of the book as our craft. Preschool storytime meets at 10:30 a.m. and is geared for ages 2-5, but siblings are always welcome. Each session consists of 20-25 minutes of stories, songs, and action rhymes followed by a craft. No registration is required.

Title: The Snow Spider Author: Jenny Nimmo Summary: Gifts from Gwyn's grandmother on his ninth birthday open up a whole new world to him, as he discovers he has magical powers that help him heal the breach with his father that has existed ever since his sister's mysterious disappearance four years before. Jenna Says: It's a very descriptive story and has lots of good parts. I liked this story because all the characters were different and interesting.

Happy Birthday L. Frank Baum!

L. Frank Baum, who wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and it's many sequels, was born on May 15, 1856. He was a write of more than just novels; he also wrote poetry, short stories, and plays. He even published some of his writing under different pseudonyms including Floyd Akers, Laura Bancroft, and Edith Van Dyne. So come into the library today and check out one of his books, or the classic Judy Garland movie.

My favorite part was when Poseidon and the cyclops army were fighting side by side with the Hundred Handed One defending Manhattan so Kronos and his army don't defeat the Gods.

He doesn't know that he is a traveler, someone who can travel between territories; different places at different times. This book is action packed and really interesting! This is why I love it.

Title: The Princess Bride Author: William Goldman Summary: Return to a time when men were men and swamps were fire swamps, full of quicksand and rodents of unusual size. Lagoons were inhabited by shrieking eels, and the most beautiful woman in the world was named ... Buttercup? Well, it's a fractured fairy tale, complete with all the fencing, fighting, chases, and escapes. Haley Says: I liked that a lot of the things happened in the book also happened in the movie. I also liked that it is a gory love story.

Title: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Author: Rick Riordan Summary: After learning that he is the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, god of the sea, twelve-year-old Percy is sent to a summer camp for demigods like himself, and joins his new friends on a quest to prevent a war between the gods. Nick Says: I like the book because in my language class we have been studying Gods so it made it more interesting. I plan on reading the next book.

May is the Time to Get Fit

Did you know that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? Come to the library and check out our selection of exercise books and DVDs. Most of them are located in the adult nonfiction section under the call number 613.7. We also have a number of biographies featuring sports legends in baseball, wrestling, football, and more.

May 1st is Mother Goose Day! So why not celebrate by reading or reciting your favorite nursery rhyme. We have many collections of nursery rhymes here at the library that you can check out.
